Great Lakes National Cemetery is located in Holly Township, Oakland County, about 50 miles northwest of downtown Detroit. The cemetery borders Lake Fagan and is located on a land grant granted by the federal government to Terrance Fagan in 1836. Historically, the property served as farmland until it was purchased by the National Cemetery Administration in 2002.
Memorial Day Preparations At Great Lakes National Cemetery Draw Hundreds Of Volunteers
In the 20th century, the property was purchased by Spanish-American War veteran-turned-industrialist Bryson Dexter Horton, who invented the "Square D" switch. Horton's invention dramatically improved electrical safety by encasing the circuit breaker in steel and protecting the user from electric shock. Mr. Gorton built a small house there in 1927, where he entertained famous locals such as Henry and Edsel Ford, who hunted and fished there.
The Great Lakes National Cemetery was established in 2005, and the first burial took place on October 17 of that year.
NICH AREA - I'm proud to have my photos featured here. My father, Henry Truman Ryan, was a World War II veteran and was buried with my mother's ashes. I think niche is also a good choice.
